Talk to reporters Dan tri, technical officer of Tram Chim National Park, said that the red-crowned crane’s outstanding features are its red head, neck and legs, stripes on its wings and steel-gray tail. Adult cranes are up to 1.8m tall, have a wingspan of up to 2.5m, and weigh up to 10kg, making them the tallest among flying birds.

The 3-year-old crane started to breed, but the crane had never bred in Tram Chim before. Cranes only come to Tram Chim to search for food in the dry season, their favorite foods are yams, snails, crabs, fish…

“Cranes are the most special species in Tram Chim, very clever. The crane’s cry is also very loud, can be heard more than 5km from the center to the edge of the forest,” the official said.

Tram Chim National Park is about 7,500 hectares wide, and is a typical original habitat of the Dong Thap Muoi region. The garden has about 130 plant species with prominent community types being flooded grasslands and melaleuca forests.

The garden is home to 232 bird species, including 32 rare species, 16 species are in the international red book. Tram Chim also has 130 species of fish, hundreds of species of plankton, reptiles, and amphibians.

Previously, thousands of red-crowned cranes came to Tram Chim to feed seasonally. However, due to changes in habitat, water levels in the reserve, intensive farming, and chemical abuse in surrounding fields, cranes will no longer return to Tram Chim from 2022.

According to the crane conservation project, the water level in the national park has been lowered, and grasslands have been renovated and restored for cranes to forage. Large-scale cage houses have also been built to be ready to receive cranes.

The staff was sent to Thailand to study and receive the transfer of crane care techniques.

In addition, more than 1,000 hectares of rice around Tram Chim will be cultivated organically to improve environmental quality and create space for cranes to nest and breed. This area will be where visitors can see the cranes with their own eyes.
