BELVEDERE is deeply saddened by the death of the important Austrian artist

We are losing an art rebel who never stopped developing and constantly reinventing his artistic means. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with Brus on the occasion of his retrospective and to experience him as a brilliant artist, intellectual and caring person. We mourn the loss of one of the greats of Austrian art and a friend of the Belvedere.

Vienna (OTS) As one of the most important pioneers of performance art, Günter Brus made the body the site of his artistic exploration in the 1960s. After turning away from activism, he placed language and drawing at the center of his work.

Director General Stella Rollig: We are losing an art rebel who never stopped developing and constantly reinventing his artistic means. It was an honor and a pleasure to work with Brus on the occasion of his retrospective and to experience him as a brilliant artist, intellectual and caring person. We mourn the loss of one of the greats of Austrian art and a friend of the Belvedere.

On the occasion of his eightieth birthday in 2018, the Belvedere honored his entire work with a comprehensive retrospective. The exhibition curated by Harald Krejci Unrest after the storm took a look at the artist’s entire oeuvre and made connections visible – from early gestural painting to performances and actions to later drawings, picture poems and theater works. A comprehensive catalog was published for the exhibition, which became an important reference work on Günter Brus.

The Belvedere collection contains 77 of his works, including collaborative works with Ana Brus, Hermann Nitsch and Gerhard Rühm. Three photos from the series Self-painting I (1964) and from Direct Art Festival, November 9, 1967 in the ballroom of the Treitlstr. trade union building. 3 (1967/2016) are currently in the collection exhibition Look! can be seen in the Upper Belvedere.
