FPÖ application for a statement regarding “Freedom of technology for the automotive industry instead of a planned economic ban policy!”

Vienna (OTS) “In his speech ‘On the Future of the Nation – Austria 2030’ last year, ÖVP Chancellor Nehammer explicitly spoke out against bans in order to achieve climate policy goals and assured that combustion engines would not be banned. Nevertheless, this black-green government has so far supported the EU’s completely exaggerated climate policy without compromise. After banning diesel and gasoline engines for cars, the EU Commission now wants to specify the type of drive for heavy commercial vehicles in a planned economy and thus abolish freedom of technology in this industry, which is essential for Europe as a business location. And in this case too, the ÖVP chancellor falls again. We will therefore submit a request for a statement regarding ‘technological freedom for the automotive industry instead of a planned economic prohibition policy’,” said the liberal Federal Councilor Andreas Spanring to tomorrow’s EU Committee of the Federal Council.

“In the proposed regulation COM (2023), the EU Commission sets almost 90 new emission standards, according to which the average CO2 emissions of new heavy vehicles must be reduced by 90 percent by 2040 compared to 2019. The requirements for inner-city buses even go beyond this objective. For new city buses, the proportion of emission-free vehicles must be 100 percent from the reporting period of 2030. The fact that the EU member states were apparently able to postpone this deadline to 2035 as part of previous negotiations is no real consolation,” criticized Spanring.

“These Commission proposals are not only to be rejected because of their planned economic prohibitive nature and their fraudulent labeling – electric vehicles are neither ’emission-free’ in their purchase nor in their operation – but simply because they do not work in practice. But the fact is also very clear that only we libertarians criticized this hidden robbery of mobility by the EU and thus also the black-green government from the start. The ÖVP Chancellor’s countless statements on this issue are just a pure marketing show – nothing more and nothing less. Low-performance and, above all, expensive electric cars, which also create new relationships of dependency for Europe, since, for example, raw materials such as lithium and cobalt have to be imported, cannot be the sole future of the motor vehicle industry. We will therefore submit a request for an opinion to the EU Committee, calling on the black-green government to reject the proposed regulation presented by the EU Commission regarding a tightening of the CO2 emission standards for new heavy commercial vehicles (COM (2023) 88). “, said the liberal Federal Council.
