Nobel laureate economist Dr. The High Court has directed the Grameen Telecom Trust of Muhammad Yunus to file an income tax appeal for the tax year 2011 to 2013 by depositing Tk 50 crore.

Monday (February 12) Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md. The High Court bench consisting of Rashed Jahangir passed the verdict.

Before this, he appeared in court on January 28 and filed an appeal against the judgment of the Labor Appeal Court in the case of violation of labor law. Yunus and three other officials of Grameen Telecom. The High Court rejected the application.

In the judgment, the court said that according to the law, Dr. Yunus has to pay. No mercy here.

Assistant Attorney General Barrister Tahmina Poly said that in November 2020, the National Board of Revenue sent a notice to the Grameen Kalyan Trust demanding income tax of about Tk 250 crore for the two years from 2011 to 2013. Then the National Board of Revenue (NBR) sought a waiver saying that the Grameen Kalyan Trust did not have the funds. After the application was rejected by the National Board of Revenue (NBR), they sought waiver of income tax. But then they had about 3.5 to 4.5 billion rupees in one account. But after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a notice asking for the money, Grameen Telecom challenged the notice and filed a writ in the High Court. The court also issued a rule on why the notice of writ hearing should not be said to be illegal. Then in the last three years, the case went to various courts and came to the concerned bench of the High Court. After hearing it today, the court dismissed Grameen Telecom’s writ petition. He also ordered Grameen Telecom to deposit 25 percent of the income tax demanded in advance as per rules and then file an appeal against NBR.

Earlier on January 1, the chairman of the third labor court of Dhaka, Sheikh Marina Sultana, in a case against the chairman of Grameen Telecom. Yunus and director Ashraful Hasan, Nurjahan Begum and M Shahjahan were sentenced to 6 months imprisonment. At the same time, the court sentenced all 4 of them to a fine of 30,000 taka and in default of payment, another 25 days imprisonment. And if they applied for separate bail after the verdict, the court granted bail to all 4 people on the condition of appeal.

On September 9, 2021, the case was filed in the Third Labor Court of Dhaka by Labor Inspector (General) SM Arifuzzaman of the Department of Inspection of Factories and Establishments.
