The Sudanese Minister of Finance, Jibril Ibrahim, revealed that 2,700 kilograms of gold were looted from the Khartoum government refinery, and that the country’s revenues decreased by more than 80 percent, due to developments in the war that has been taking place between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since last April 15.

The minister did not specify the parties involved in the gold plundering process, and pointed out that “Sudan’s gold reserves are still in a safe place.”

Ibrahim said in a press conference in the city of Port Sudan, east of the country, that the war created “difficult” health conditions and led to the loss of quantities of medicine, estimated at more than 500 million dollars.

He added, “The government was keen to set a flexible budget for the year 2024, so that it would be easy to change it every three months, according to the variables of the situation, because it is a war budget.”

The Sudanese Minister of Finance pointed out that “the most important items in the 2024 budget are support for the army and the health sector, which has witnessed deterioration as a result of the war.”

Efforts have so far failed to end the ten-month-long conflict between the army and the Rapid Support Forces.

Thousands of people were killed and about 8 million were forced to flee their homes, meaning that Sudan has the largest number of displaced people in the world.

The United Nations says that more than half of the Sudanese population of more than 48 million, or about 25 million people, are in need of assistance, including 18 million people facing acute food insecurity.
