Gent –

A crazed PostNL parcel courier ran over an 11-year-old boy’s bicycle twice in Ghent on Wednesday and filmed his own actions. “He would be better off looking for another job.”

11-year-old Gustav went to buy a gift for his birthday with his grandmother on Wednesday. Together they ended a fun afternoon with lunch at Umamido, the ramen restaurant in Walpoortstraat. When Gustav wanted to take his bicycle afterwards in the Korianderstraat, the alley next to Café Marimain that runs to the Krook library, it lay in pieces on the ground.

A full terrace saw that the bicycle had fallen over and a PostNL parcel courier had not bothered to straighten it. “On the contrary. He ran over the bicycle and, as if that wasn’t bad enough, he ran over it again afterwards and filmed it with his mobile phone,” says Gustav’s bewildered mother. “My son was rightly very affected by the incident. He felt targeted.” (read more below photo)

Several young people sitting on the terrace wrote down what they had seen. “I received the number of the package he dropped off there from the clothing store Just Waldo. PostNL will now find out who the driver was, but that could take until Saturday,” says Gustav’s mother. “The lady on the phone told me that the number of complaints about drivers and incorrectly delivered parcels is in the hundreds.”

Vintage bicycle

Not much was left of Gustav’s bicycle. “Very unfortunate. It was a vintage bicycle with beautiful images,” says Gustav’s mother. “I had to go to the bicycle shop with my son to buy a new bicycle. Not cheap, but that boy needs a bike. That driver should look for another job. Even when you are under pressure, this behavior is not possible. For the same money he once killed a child.”

Lies Florentie, spokeswoman for PostNL, reacts shocked to the incident. “This is absolutely unacceptable. We strongly disapprove of this. Safety is important to us. The couriers work through a subcontractor and we will contact the employer and ensure that they take the necessary action. We will continue to monitor this.”
