The Government of Chile expressed its dismay and condemnation at the events that occurred today in Gaza, which have left numerous victims in the midst of a humanitarian operation.

This, La Moneda highlighted through a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Minrel), contravenes the provisional measures ordered by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 26.

The ICJ urged the Israeli authorities to adopt “all possible measures” to protect the Palestinian population of the Gaza Strip and urgently guarantee that they receive the necessary help, in a battery of precautionary measures agreed upon after a complaint filed with the court for South Africa.

“The humanitarian disaster resulting from Israeli military operations confirms the need for an immediate ceasefire in the area,” states the Chilean Foreign Ministry. In this sense, the portfolio led by Minister Alberto Van Klaveren, reiterates the need to resume direct negotiations between Israel and Palestine “that allow reaching a fair and definitive peace agreement within the framework of the two-state solution.”

Therefore, the Minrel statement concludes, “The Government of Chile calls on the international community to recognize the State of Palestine as a full member of the United Nations (UN)“.
