On Sunday, the media office of the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee reported to TASS that six militants belonging to ISIS were neutralized during an anti-terrorism operation in the city of Karabulak in the Republic of Ingushetia, a federal entity and one of the federal republics in Russia.

The decision of the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation, issued on December 29, 2014, considered ISIS a terrorist organization, and banned its activity in Russia.

The media office said: “As a result of the anti-terrorism operation carried out by the operations headquarters of the Russian National Anti-Terrorism Committee in the Republic of Ingushetia, 6 bandits were neutralized in one of the residential buildings in the city of Karabulak,” adding that their identities were identified, and according to preliminary information, they are followers of the organization. ISIS, and 3 of them, including the gang leader, were on the federal wanted list.

The committee added that the gunmen, who were eliminated, were involved in terrorist acts, including the attack on a traffic police station and the killing of 3 police officers in March 2023.

The office continued that during an inspection of the site of the clash, which took place on Saturday night, with the militants, weapons, ammunition, hand grenades and an explosive device were found, confirming that there were no casualties among security personnel or civilians.

Russian media reported that as of Sunday morning, “effective measures” had been taken to “neutralize” the militants.

Interfax said an “anti-terrorism regime” had been implemented, giving authorities greater leverage in restricting the movement of individuals and communications, and nearby residents had been evacuated to ensure safety.

Ingushetia, Russia’s smallest region, is located between North Ossetia and Chechnya. Its population is about half a million people.

For nearly a decade until 2017, Russian security forces were fighting an armed insurgency of Islamist groups in Ingushetia as well as in Dagestan and Chechnya.
