On Monday, the International Court of Justice began hearing arguments regarding the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories, the most prominent of which was by the Palestinian Foreign Minister.

During his plea, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki accused Israel, before the International Court of Justice, of pursuing “apartheid.”

Al-Maliki said: “Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.”

He added: “The Israeli occupation must be ended in accordance with international resolutions and without conditions.”

Al-Maliki noted that Israel is defying the order of the International Court of Justice prohibiting acts of genocide in Gaza.

Historic hearing

Historic hearings began on Monday at the United Nations International Court of Justice regarding the legality of Israel’s 57-year-old occupation of the lands on which the Palestinians seek to establish a state.

Palestinian representatives spoke first as the International Court of Justice began hearing legal arguments following a request by the UN General Assembly for a non-binding advisory opinion on Israel’s policies in the occupied territories.

Although the case began in the court’s Great Hall of Justice against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas, it will instead focus on Israel’s open control of the occupied West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.

After the Palestinians speak before the court on Monday, an unprecedented number of 51 countries and 3 international organizations will speak.

The court is likely to take several months to issue its decision.

No Israeli official will speak during the sessions, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government will submit a written statement.

Israel rejects any accusation that it is implementing an apartheid system.
