Households face additional costs, industry was excluded at the last minute

Vienna (OTS) The Chamber of Labor is critical of the government proposal for the Renewable Gases Act (EGG) presented today. In comparison to last year’s draft assessment, the government proposal now provides for the costs of achieving the green gas quota to be passed on to small companies and households. This means that households and small businesses will incur additional costs of around 1.3 to 1.8 billion euros by 2030 just because of the green gas quota.

From the point of view of the Chamber of Labor, this situation is unacceptable. “In the medium term, renewable gas will no longer be used in households, but households should still bear the costs. Large consumers such as industry are excluded, that is unacceptable,” says Tobias Schweitzer, AK Head of Economics.

Renewable gas is essential for the energy transition. However, the potential for domestic renewable gas production is severely limited. Studies show that only around a quarter of the future demand for green gases will be covered by domestic production. Renewable gases must therefore be used extremely economically and sensibly in the future. Its use is particularly useful in power generation and in some areas of industry. However, industry in particular is exempt from bearing the costs according to the law.

“Expanding renewable gas production is a macroeconomic task. We expect that a new solution for bearing costs will be found here,” said Schweitzer. The AK is calling for a comprehensive revision of the law and sees broader cost sharing as essential,” said Schweitzer.
