National and international flagship project already advises 320 health facilities

Vienna (OTS) The “Consultation for climate-friendly health facilities” project supports health facilities in Austria in making a contribution to climate protection and sustainability. The project, initiated by the Ministry of Health and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, started in autumn 2022 and has since attracted great interest from national and international experts. All calls were fully booked and over 320 hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, senior citizens’ and care facilities, outpatient clinics, primary care units, doctors’ practices and pharmacies from all over Austria took advantage of the consultations.

A new call starts today, registrations for the project are still possible until May 31, 2024. This means that 140 health facilities have the opportunity to take advantage of the benefits, such as reducing costs by reducing energy and resource consumption, increasing security of supply and creating a climate-friendly and health-promoting environment.

Scientific analyzes show that the Austrian healthcare system causes around seven percent of the Austrian carbon footprint and thus also contributes to the climate crisis. The aim of the project is therefore to support healthcare facilities in developing into climate-friendly facilities. You receive the necessary expertise, relevant information and concrete support from a single source and are accompanied free of charge by an expert in the development and implementation of climate protection measures.

The “Climate and Health Competence Center” of Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, which is part of the Ministry of Health’s “Health Promotion Agenda”, developed the project and is now responsible for its implementation.

Call 2024: Registrations possible from now until the end of May

The Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection as well as the Climate and Health Competence Center invite you to take part in the project. The consultation will start in spring 2024 and will be completed at the end of 2025.

The project is divided into three phases: during an initial consultation in spring/summer 2024, the consultant will analyze the situation and work with the health facility to develop an individual climate action plan. Immediately after the initial consultation, the second phase begins, in which the defined measures are implemented by the health facilities. In the third phase, after around twelve months, the implementation of the climate action plan as well as inhibiting and enabling conditions will be evaluated by the consulting companies. The results of the evaluation represent the basis for further developments and recommendations.

Registration is possible until May 31, 2024. We would like to point out that the number of participants in this project is limited and the consulting service will be awarded after the expressions of interest have been received.

Additionally: 350 million for energy efficiency in healthcare facilities

Building on this consulting project, the Ministry of Climate Protection, together with the Ministry of Health and Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, has developed two new funding channels for which 350 million euros are available. The goal is to make more healthcare facilities climate-fit, increase energy efficiency potential and at the same time reduce the facilities’ operating costs. There is a comprehensive package for hospitals, rehabilitation centers and retirement and nursing homes to support them in converting their facilities from fossil fuels to energy-efficient operation.
