A high-speed train will connect Ankara and Istanbul in 80 minutes, Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu announced, unveiling a new project that will bring Turkey’s rail network up to speed.
With the new high-speed train project, the 344-kilometer distance between the capital Ankara and the country’s largest city, Istanbul, will be covered in an hour and 20 minutes.
“Although the current high-speed train between Istanbul and Ankara meets today’s needs, reducing the travel time to six hours, in the long term, different transport alternatives will be needed to connect the country’s two most populous cities,” Uraloglu said in a televised interview. , as reported by the Hurriyet Daily News.
According to the minister, the current train between Istanbul and Ankara “will inevitably prove insufficient in a decade”, and with the new superfast train, which is planned to serve the connection between the two cities, “the country will move to the next technological level”.
The new train will reach a speed of 350 km/h, the minister said. According to him, the project will be completed on paper by 2028, and the train will be put into operation by 2035.
Uraloglu also mentioned that four new airports will be built in the country.
