Vladimir Putin has been elected as the President of Russia for the fifth time. He will be sworn in as president in a ceremony at the Kremlin on Tuesday (May 7). However, the United States, United Kingdom and most countries of the European Union will not send ambassadors to this event. Qatar-based media Al Jazeera reported this news.

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said the US did not consider the Russian election to be free and fair. So no one is going to Putin’s swearing-in ceremony.

The UK and Canada have said they will not send anyone to attend the event. The German Foreign Ministry said that they will not participate in it either.

A European Union spokesman said 20 EU member states would boycott the event. However, 7 EU countries including France, Hungary and Slovakia will participate in the event.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that Ukraine does not see any legal basis for recognizing Putin as the democratically elected and legitimate president of the Russian Federation.

All the heads of Moscow’s foreign diplomatic missions have been invited to attend Putin’s inauguration, a Putin aide said.

The swearing-in ceremony will begin at noon on Tuesday. It will be broadcast live on Russian television. The swearing-in ceremony comes months before Putin completes 25 years in power.

Putin will arrive at the Grand Kremlin Palace in a luxury motorcade. He will then walk through the red carpeted corridors of the palace to St. Andrew’s Hall. It is there that Putin will take the oath of office for another six-year term of Russia’s president with extraordinary powers. He will then give a short speech. At this time, he will also take blessings from the Father of the Russian Orthodox Church.

This leader won the presidential election held last March by getting 87.28 percent votes. After the inauguration, Russia’s current government will resign and a new government will take over, subject to parliamentary approval. After the swearing-in, Putin will choose a prime minister and present it to the State Duma, the lower house of the Russian parliament, for approval. Current Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin is expected to be reappointed as a successful head of government amid the country’s growing economy despite the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and Western economic sanctions.
