Effective measures and increased participation of those affected have been implemented to combat noise pollution

Vienna (OTS) “Noise can not only be annoying or disruptive, it can also make you sick. Traffic noise in particular is cited by many Austrians as the most common source of noise,” says Hermann Weratschnig, transport spokesman for the Green Party, speaking today against noise.

“The negative effects on health do not just depend on the volume. Even at lower levels, noise causes stress, sleep disorders, affects concentration and can also affect the cardiovascular system. Those affected who live near busy roads, railway lines or even flight routes know a thing or two about this,” emphasizes Weratschnig.

“The federal government, in particular Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler, is therefore taking a whole range of measures to improve the quality of life of those affected by noise and to audibly reduce traffic noise. For example, noise protection along the main traffic routes is being gradually improved and expanded. We are investing more heavily in a noise protection offensive through Asfinag and have doubled the annual budget from around 50 million euros to 100 million euros for the coming years. To combat rail noise, we are investing in quiet tracks and modern, quieter rail vehicles and are also supporting residents in installing appropriate noise protection windows,” says the Green Party’s transport spokesman.

“With the public comment opportunity now being introduced in this form for the first time for all citizens, those affected by aircraft noise can participate in the design of flight routes. Until now, this was difficult or even impossible to do in Austria. By amending the Airport Fees Act, we have created a legal basis and obliged airports to include noise as a factor in their fee regulations. With the Federal Council’s decision to amend the StVO, we are taking a further step towards more peace and quality of life today by making it easier for municipalities to introduce 30 km/h zones in local areas,” adds Weratschnig.

“In addition to the major political adjustments, everyone can of course also contribute to reducing and avoiding noise. I believe that showing consideration for others in your everyday behavior is fundamentally sensible and appropriate, not just during the day when there is noise,” says Weratschnig.
