Hundreds of thousands of tons of old clothes from Europe end up in Africa every year. In Ghana alone in West Africa, large container ships regularly arrive with mountains of used clothing, flooding the markets there. The second-hand clothing market has created thousands of jobs in Ghana’s capital Accra, but has also led to enormous problems. The “WELTjournal” shows how the excessive used clothing market in Ghana leads to huge mountains of garbage, which pollutes beaches and coasts and destroys local textile production.

Almost 200 billion items of clothing are produced every year, most in Asia. The business with short-lived, cheap fashion continues to boom. Large fashion chains produce a new collection every two to three weeks. A good third of the clothes are never sold, but destroyed. “WELTjournal +” looks behind the scenes of the industry and shows how the so-called fast fashion model works and how it reaches its limits with its absurd level of overproduction and harms people and the environment.
