The former President of Greece Prokopios Pavlopoulos made a speech in the context of a special commemorative event organized by the Academy of Athens in cooperation with the Embassy of Armenia on the theme “Tribute in honor of the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide”, in which, in particular, he stated that on behalf of the Academy of Athens, he sincerely with excitement and self-evident duty pays tribute to the tragic victims of the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, as well as to the merciless criminals of the political rulers of Athens at that time.
This is reported by the Greek newspaper Naftemporiki.
He reminded that Greece was one of the first countries to recognize the Armenian Genocide as a serious crime against humanity, which should never be forgotten or go unpunished.
“Indeed, by law 2397/1996, which was adopted at the proposal of the Greek Parliament, on the one hand, the Armenian Genocide was recognized, and on the other hand, April 24 of each year was declared a day of remembrance for 1.5 million people. Innocent souls brutally murdered in this heinous crime against humanity. And here I must emphasize, and I will point it out again at the end of my speech, that Greece and Armenia have been walking together for decades, with close friendly ties, on the difficult path of protecting the highest principles and values, especially peace, democracy, justice and fundamental human rights.” – he mentioned.
He added that these “pillars” of such sincere friendship and close cooperation between Armenia and Greece are also based on the martyrdom of the genocides experienced by both peoples.
“Times that we should never forget, not because we have a feeling of revenge against the Turkish aggressors. But because this memory inspires us and directs us to forever serve the next great, first of all humanistic principle, “Never again,” emphasized the former president.
