The officer who died on Thursday night after a chase in Charleroi was due to get married in two weeks. This is what his fiancée said in an interview with La Dernière Heure. “I don’t know what I’ll do without him,” he sounds emotional.

A police car was involved in an accident in Couillet, a sub-municipality of Charleroi, on Thursday night during the pursuit of a suspicious vehicle. The driver of the combination lost control of the vehicle in a bend and crashed into a facade. Benjamin Leduc (34), who was sitting in the passenger seat, was killed instantly. The man had three children and had been working for the police for twelve years.

His partner Mélissa expresses her sadness on Saturday in a conversation with La Dernière Heure. “We met thirteen years ago and we immediately clicked. It may be hard to believe, but we hardly ever argued. We have three children, and we were supposed to get married on April 20th. We lived in a fairy tale. He was the kind of man you only see in movies, and every day we loved each other even more.”

According to his partner, Leduc knew he was doing dangerous work. “He told me that since we had children he felt less comfortable and more afraid,” says Mélissa. “That’s also one of the reasons why we wanted to get married. Because he didn’t want me to be left with nothing if something bad happened to him. I am afraid that this will not be taken into account now. And I don’t know what to do without him.”

Benjamin Leduc is buried on April 12 in Thy-le-Château, in the province of Namur.
