Charleroi moved to safer places after the much-needed win against KV Mechelen. The first half proved to be particularly effective, but the end was thrilling, when goalkeeper Hervé Koffi prevented the equalizer with a world-class save. The redemption goal came during Mazzu’s time.

Charleroi – KV Mechelen in brief:

    • Key moment: a save so punishing that it left him injured. Hervé Koffi made a world-class save in the final final by knocking the equalizer from his own goal. A few minutes later he sees the redeeming 3-1 from the sidelines.
    • Man of the Match: this award could also go to Koffi, but it could also go to Adem Zorgane. With one goal very early and one very late, the midfielder played an important role in his team’s much-needed victory.
    • Remarkable: winning tonight was a must for Charleroi to avoid starting the new year with a hangover. It worked for only the second time in the last 9 league games, not surprisingly also at home. All 5 of his wins this season have come from Zebre in Mambourg.

    Welcome early push for Charleroi

Charleroi found themselves in dangerous waters for this last match of the year. Will Felice Mazzu still be the captain in 2024 who could send his team back to safer places?

After just 3 minutes, Adem Zorgane provided a welcome early push. He surprisingly won a free kick with a strong header from the edge of the area.

The message for KV Mechelen, who do not want to be dragged into the relegation swamp again, was answered quickly. Foulon and Bassette are closer, but Malinwa does not demonstrate the same efficiency as Charleroi.

With the second chance it was bingo again for the home team. Guiagon threw Bates to the wind, Sylla thanked him for his first starting spot by finishing.

KVM, shocked after that double blow, can no longer think of a response before the break. Relief for Charleroi, who seemed to be able to lift themselves out of the relegation zone.

Zorgane opened the scoring after just 3 minutes.

Opluchting in the time of Mazzu

Although the visitors showed after the break that they too could be efficient. The first chance was immediately successful: Foulon put a nice cross into the net, after which Bassette could no longer miss from close range.

It turned out to be a thrilling finish, in which only a world-class save from Hervé Koffi could prevent the equaliser. He deflected Bassette’s header from his square, but was injured.

It was precisely during Mazzu’s time that redemption arrived for the Charleroi coach, who was under pressure. Substitute Heymans remained calm and gave Zorgane his second goal of the night in the 99th minute.

3-1 and a much-needed triple for Charleroi, who jump to safe 12th place. KV Mechelen are 2 places higher with one point more and have not yet been freed from relegation stress.

Mazzu: “The players have shown that they want to continue with me”

    • Felice Mazzu (Charleroi coach): “I want to congratulate my boys, who asserted themselves today after the many criticisms aimed at the team. I don’t thank one player in particular, but the whole group. In reality, Koffi couldn’t do anything else” A parade, but a very important one. I hope his injury isn’t too serious, we’ll see in the next few days and weeks. I’m also happy for Adem (Zorgane, ed.) who today demonstrated that he has quality after those difficult weeks, the players have shown that they want to continue with me.”
    • Besnik Hasi (coach KV Mechelen): “We were not strong enough in the first half. Then we reacted and scored. Due to an incredible save by Koffi, the second goal did not come. We were too weak before the break and we played without risks “Everything must go well to achieve a result. I don’t end the year with a bad feeling, because we have reacted well in the last few weeks. We will take this first half as an opportunity to learn.”
    • Jordi Vanlerberghe (KV Mechelen): “We played dominantly in the second half and we have to take advantage of our chances. All in all, I think we deserve more today. It will be very exciting until the end of the season with all those teams on one handkerchief.”

    Phase by phase

END: Much needed victory for Charleroi

After almost 100 more minutes of football, it ended in Charleroi. It was a thrilling finish, in which Koffi prevented the equalizer with a world-class save. It was during Mazzu’s time that relief came for the coach under pressure.

    GOAL: Beslissing in time Mazzu!

KV Mechelen plays everything in the final and Heymans has a lot of time in transition. He remains calm when he doesn’t find an opening and gives in to Zorgane who has space: 3-1, books allowed!

Koffi even has to go wide, reserve goalkeeper Delavallée has to fill the place.

It was such a great save that Koffi needs treatment, but he’s ready for the corner again. He can block it, after which he needs assistance again.

    Koffi’s World Save!

And this should have been 2-2, if it hadn’t been for Koffi’s world-class save. In fact, Bassette does it perfectly and heads towards the square. Koffi launches the ball beautifully out of his goal – no draw and what a save!

    Miss Bernier!

This should have been 3-1! Substitute Bernier has time and space to aim for the far post, but he shows that this is not his specialty. Coucke’s goal from close range is the one who decides.

    Ilaimaiharitra net finished

With a bit of luck they will keep possession of the ball in Charleroi, after which it will go to Ilaimaharitra. He can score just outside the penalty area. Just above Coucke’s goal. 3-1 would be the death blow for Malinwa.

    Bassette hits the post

It’s not the ball, but Bassette himself that hits the post. He just can’t reach Vanlerberghe’s cross and hits the goal post. Miraculously it looks like rush hour can continue, which for a while looked bad.

All things considered, thinks Besnik Hasi. With Konaté, instead of a striker, a defensive midfielder is added. Lauberbach must contribute to the equalizer.

    Bates saves the furniture

Now Charleroi is also close to scoring, but Bates barely manages to kick close to his own goal. The ball flies into the corner.

Guiagon is exhausted after a great match and leaves for Bernier.

    Not 2-2!

A corner kick from Hairemans, again provoked by Antonio, is carried by the wind and surprises Koffi, who is in no man’s land. For some reason the ball doesn’t go in: what an opportunity!

Substitute Antonio has just provided the pre-assist and brings a little more verve to Malinwa’s team. He drives Dragsnes crazy at times and claims a penalty after a handball by the Charleroi player. But no, this is not a penalty.

    Yellow for Mrabti

He just escaped with a final warning, so now he’s a prize for Mrabti. An ostentatious push results in a yellow card.

The scorer Sylla is rested by Mazzu. Benbouali takes his place.

It’s up to KV Mechelen to finish 100% in this second half.

    Eddy Botteldoorne on Radio 1

    OBJECTIVE: Bassette with connection!

Actually, out of nowhere, the link target suddenly appears! Foulon collects a ball from the right and puts it in front of goal. Bassette can no longer make mistakes from close range: 2-1, we have another match.

    Silla persistent

Turntable Guiagon serves Sylla on the counterattack, even if the ball is not ideal behind the attacker. He also delays too long, which means there are enough people at KV Mechelen.

A hospital ball from Konaté opens up a new opportunity for the home team. Zorgane also fails to frame his attempt and decides on Coucke’s goal, just like Ilaimaharitra a few minutes ago.

Another chance for Charleroi, this time through substitute Ilaimaharitra. Guiagon’s pass to the edge of the area was good, but the substitute’s shot was too wild.

    Coucke stands still

On 2 consecutive corner kicks, Coucke is equally often right on Sylla’s attempts. The goalkeeper, however, keeps his team in the game with a double save.

    Bates runs away

Sylla suddenly almost has a clear path to Coucke after a deep ball. Bates wears his attacker’s jersey, but doesn’t lie down. It could have been a big problem for the Scottish defender.

    Yellow for Rogelj

Cobbaut is mowed down by Rogelj during a rapid counterattack by Mechelen. A logical yellow card.

KV Mechelen didn’t come out of the locker room badly with a nice corner as their first threat. Even if Charleroi made themselves dangerous during the substitution.

    KICK-OFF OF THE 2ND HALF

Ilaimaharitra warmed up intensely at half-time and replaced the injured Morioka in Charleroi. Antonio comes to relieve Walsh at KVM.

REST: Headache for KVM, relief for Charleroi

A minute before his teammates, Morioka limped into the locker room. Charleroi’s first half was another flaw, particularly effective with only two shots between the posts. KV Mechelen didn’t create any more chances after the 2nd goal, will it work after the break?

    Morioka has fallen

Lying down without contact is never a good sign. The match of the already heavily registered Morioka seems to be over before the break.

Mazzu will not be dissatisfied after his team’s first half.

    1 – extra time

An additional minute of time is added.

The match becomes more bitter, with Vanlerberghe and Bager escaping yellow after obvious errors. De Cremer tries to solve it without cards.

Men like Mbenza and Sylla who were given the chance show themselves tonight.

    Eddy Botteldoorne on Radio 1

    Sylla walks away

The attacker also contributes in defense. A dangerous free kick from Hairemans was defused by Sylla.

Can Malinwa become dangerous again at half-time? The football was too sloppy in the final minutes to beat the Zebre.

Another intelligent counterattack from the hosts, but Mbenza fails to find a partner in the area. The ball remains in front of KV Mechelen, Charleroi awaits the counterattack.

Here the Charleroi players seem to have saved Felice Mazzu’s skin.

    Eddy Botteldoorne on Radio 1

Sylla gives Charleroi the double advantage.

    GOAL: Sylla doubles!

Thank you Sylla for your confidence in his first starting position! Guiagon puts Bates beautifully into the wind and then puts him aside for Sylla in the area. Calmly scoring the 2-0 alongside Coucke, Charleroi are proving particularly effective tonight.

    Bassette loses control

Hairemans is once again the man of the beautiful opening, this time towards Bassette. However, he lacks control, so Koffi is quick to get to the corner. There was more to this for KVM.

KV Mechelen have taken possession and are moving forward with many people. If you lose the ball there is plenty of space, which Guiagon almost takes advantage of. Cobbaut’s intervention is necessary.

    Coffee for the first time

Hairemans beautifully sends Walsh towards the byline, his cross reaching Foulon at the 2nd post. Koffi reverses his stunt attempt.

Vanlerberghe tries to deflect the ball towards Koffi’s goal, but it is an immense deflection. The response to Mechelen remains pending for now.

Konaté plays very sloppily, after which things move quickly with Morioka and Guiagon. The result is nothing more than a corner kick.

KV Mechelen tries to find an answer to this initial blow. If they lost tonight, Malinwa would be sucked into the relegation battle. Something they obviously want to avoid.

In Charleroi we will soon be able to celebrate.

GOAL: Zorgane immediately puts Charleroi back in the lead!

Would be great! A long free kick is headed perfectly by Zorgane from just inside the area. Coucke is too far away and can’t get to the ball: immediately 1-0!

    KICK OFF

Charleroi got the party started. Can they add a much-needed treble or will Zebre begin 2024 with serious relegation concerns?

The 22 players enter the field led by Wesli De Cremer. Just a few more minutes and we can start.

Many substitutions at Charleroi. Captain Ilaimaharitra makes a surprise start from the bench. Dabbagh, Marcq and Heymans are also excluded from the starting eleven. Van Cleemput, Morioka and Sylla leave.

Every match is difficult, but we can do much better at home than away. I want a group that is 100% committed and has confidence in front of goal again.

    Charleroi-coach Mazzu

The group is frustrated and aware of the difficult situation. But the group is working hard and with full enthusiasm to change the situation.

Charleroi could only win 4 more times

Charleroi is in terrible waters. Coach Mazzu’s team has managed to win only 4 times this season and is in 13th place after the 1-0 defeat against STVV. On November 25, Westerlo was Charleroi’s last victory (3-2). This was followed by a point against RWDM and Standard and a defeat against Union and STVV.

KV Mechelen recorded a good win against Standard last weekend and are 9th with 4 points more than their hosts tonight.

On 11 November the two teams met in the first leg: the score was 1-0 after a penalty from Hairemans.
