From April, RF2 agents will collect waste from households. The Ampefiloha fokontany will be the pilot zone for this project.

A new waste collection system will be introduced in a pilot area of ​​the city. This is Ampefiloha where RF2 agents will be responsible for this collection, the operationalization of which is planned for April. The RF2 are local structures at the fokontany level in charge of coordinating community actions related to cleanliness and sanitation. “The use of plastic bags will be applied during the collection of waste from each household, with waste sorting at source. They will categorize waste to facilitate recycling,” according to Oyo Andrianirinaholisoa Razakamahefa, director of sanitation at the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (MEAH). This activity is part of the implementation of the “project to improve the solid waste management system in Antananarivo”. The objective is to improve the solid waste management capacity in the Capital. Yesterday, a second meeting of the joint coordination committee took place yesterday at Analakely Town Hall to facilitate inter-organizational coordination. It also saw the participation of Sandimanjaka Rakotomiarana, first deputy mayor of the Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA), Tiana Razafimanahaka, general director of the Municipal Sanitation Company (SMA) and Rikuya Noiri, deputy resident representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Achievements

Apart from this project, JICA also implemented a non-refundable donation project for the purchase of 32 multi-bins, six dump trucks and 189 bins for waste collection and transportation as well as one bulldozer, two excavators and two dump trucks for the improvement of the Andralanitra landfill site including operation and maintenance tools and equipment for these vehicles and heavy machinery. The use of these vehicles and heavy machinery has already started and will be put into full service by the end of the year. Eight dump trucks have already been put into service and the remaining vehicles and heavy machinery will start operating by the end of the year.
