Rio enters operational phase 4 after heavy rains

The firefighters intervened more than 150 incidents statewide as of 7:05 am. Flooding and tree falls were recorded. On Saturday and Sunday morning, 29 sirens were activated in 16 communities. Residents were asked to leave their homes. The support points already known in the communities were opened by community Civil Protection agents.

The Ronaldo Gazolla municipal hospital, in Acari, in the north of Rio, remained without electricity in the early hours of Sunday. The health unit is close to the point most affected by the heavy rains that hit the region.

The hospital’s basement, where the garage and some operations and maintenance areas are located, was flooded. For safety reasons, electricity was removed from the building and all life support devices began to work using their own batteries, with great autonomy and without interruptions. According to the Department of Health, the patients were closely monitored by healthcare workers.

In the early hours of the morning, the Municipal Conservation Department sent teams and machines to drain the groundwater and clean the outdoor area, and by mid-morning, power had been restored to most of the hospital.

Heavy rains flooded the facilities of the 9th BPM (Rocha Miranda), which is located in the Honório Gurgel neighborhood, in the Northern Zone.

The damage caused by the storm is still being examined by the unit’s command. From a preliminary investigation it appears that cars parked waiting for maintenance services, private cars and some battalion structures were hit.
