Venereal diseases are on the rise in Spain

Spaniards have learned very little about how to prevent sexually transmitted diseases in the last 30 years. At least that is what emerges from the last Report on Epidemiological Surveillance of Sexually Transmitted Infections of 2022. which was made public last week by the Ministry of Health. In the year 2022, last one for which data is available, 23,333 cases of gonorrhea were reported, a figure that doubles that of the previous year, with 14,862 cases.

Ceuta did not report any cases in 2022.

Regarding cases of syphilis, in 2022 Spain suffered the highest rate since 1995. The communities that reported highest rates were Canary Islands, Madrid, Catalonia and Balearic Islands. Those with the lowest incidence were Aragón, La Rioja and Castilla La Mancha. Melilla did not report cases in 2022.

As in gonococcal infection -gonorrhea-, rates were higher in men homosexuals (71.5%), 10.2% corresponded to heterosexual women, 4.2% to heterosexual men and 12.3% and 1.9% to men and women with unspecified sexual transmission, respectively.
