WASHINGTON – Military United States of America (US) has secretly deployed advanced missiles that can disable electronic components at nuclear sites Iran using high power microwaves.
The missile, known as the Counter-Electronics High Power Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP), was first tested in 2012 and was co-developed by Boeing’s Phantom Works for the US Air Force Research Laboratory. The missile is known to have been operational since 2019.
Washington has remained silent on where exactly the US is deploying these weapons or whether it has shared this technology with other countries.
Mary Lou Robinson, former chief of the High Power Microwave Division of the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base, was quoted as saying Mail Onlinesaid that at least 20 CHAMP missiles are currently operational.
According to him, the missile is capable of destroying any military target, including nuclear facilities.
How does CHAMP Operate?
CHAMP is equipped with air-launched cruise missiles delivered by B-52 bombers.
Once it enters enemy airspace, the missile will remain in a low position and emit high-power microwave energy directed at the target device. This ultimately “fries” and destroys the enemy’s military capabilities without having to use explosives and cause casualties.
According to reports Israel HayomSunday (21/4/2024), the missile is equipped with electromagnetic pulse cannon. Very powerful microwave ovens are harnessed to produce concentrated energy beams that trigger voltage spikes in electronic equipment, rendering them useless.
This development comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East as Israel and Iran exchanged missile and drone attacks over the past week.
US President Joe Biden has warned Iran that further attacks on Israel would further plunge the Middle East into conflict.
Iran over the weekend tried to protect its equipment from the threat of an Israeli attack, but US officials said it would not be effective against high-powered microwave missiles (HPM).
In addition to underground bunkers and command centers, HPM can quickly disable fighters, tanks, ships and missile systems, according to US officials.
