A significant step towards the challenge for a cleaner Antananarivo was taken today with the official receipt of the first batch of equipment as part of the “Solid Waste Management Equipment Improvement Project for the Clean City in Antananarivo” or GESDA. The President of the Republic, Andry Rajoelina, made a trip to the headquarters of the Municipal Sanitation Company (SMA) on March 4, 2024 on this occasion. This project, financed by JICA (Japanese Cooperation) to the tune of 25 billion ariary, aims to strengthen the solid waste management capacity in the city of Antananarivo. By September 2024, the Municipal Sanitation Company (SMA) will have at its disposal 32 multi-dump trucks, 6 dump trucks for collecting and transporting waste, 2 dump trucks for operating the landfill site of Andralanitra, 1 bulldozer, 2 excavators, 189 garbage bins, and many other equipment.

Green number. This initiative will triple the SMA’s waste processing capacity, thus contributing to improving hygiene in the city. All trucks have been fitted with GPS monitoring to monitor the routes they make daily. The President of the Republic did not fail to thank the Japanese government for this fruitful collaboration with a view to restoring cleanliness in the capital. President Rajoelina also sent his congratulations to the president of the special delegation of Antananarivo, Richard Ramanambitana, while reiterating the importance of commitment and local actions for the benefit of the population in the exercise of his new function. The Head of State gave clear directives for the immediate sanitation of the capital, the creation of a telephone line (toll-free number) dedicated to receiving grievances from the population as well as the development of a clear timetable for waste collection.

Concrete solutions. In the long term, the Malagasy state also plans to set up sites to transform waste into fertilizer and energy. “We must work for the well-being of the population and offer them concrete solutions” declared the President. Furthermore, he also gave instructions to improve the working conditions of SMA agents who are on the front line in garbage collection. Today’s ceremony saw the presence of the Japanese ambassador, Koji Abe, accompanied by the resident representative of the Japanese International Cooperation Agency in Madagascar, Tanaka Kaori, as well as the Minister of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Fidiniavo Ravokatra, and the Minister of Decentralization and Territorial Planning, Naina Andriantsitohaina.
