The Polish border guard recently detained a Russian soldier who illegally crossed the border with Belarus in the east of the country. According to the Polish media, he is a deserter, which came directly from the fighting in Ukraine. The Russian ambassador to Poland said today that he is asking the Polish authorities to confirm the information that has appeared in the media.
Radio station RMF FM said the 41-year-old man was in civilian clothes and unarmed. Polish border guards found Russian military documents with him, including a contract with the army regarding his participation in the invasion of Ukraine. In order to get to Poland, he allegedly used the migration route used by refugees from crisis areas in Africa and the Middle East. Poland has long accused the regime of Belarusian authoritarian leader Alexander Lukashenko of using these people in a difficult situation as a weapon in a hybrid war against the West.
Katarzyna Zdanowicz, spokeswoman for the Polish border guard in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, where the Russian was detained, confirmed to TVN24 that this happened “in the last few days” and that “the man had valid military documents with him”.
