Bayramov said that there is a change in the structure of the geographical origin of tourists coming to Azerbaijan compared to previous years: “The number of Europeans is increasing, the visits of Arab tourists are decreasing. Although the number of visitors from the Gulf countries decreased by 9.3 percent, the number of visitors from the European Union increased by 39.5 percent.
“The decrease in the number of Arab tourists is associated with the increase in interest in alternative tourist markets and the still high tourism prices in Azerbaijan. The increase in the number of arrivals from Europe is due to the increase in the desire to go to tourism in the old continent after the pandemic, the increase in the number of business trips and the increase in special interest in the region as a whole. At the same time , there has been an increase in the interest of foreigners in health tourism in Azerbaijan in recent years.
The expert emphasized that tourism is the sector that brings the most currency to the country after the energy sector. In 2019, the year before the pandemic, more than 3 million tourists came to the country, and foreigners spent about 2.6 billion dollars in Azerbaijan that year: “In this regard, updating the country of origin of incoming tourists, especially cooperation in this field with countries located in Europe and Southeast Asia it is important to strengthen it. This can increase the stability of tourism revenues.”
