JAKARTA – The appearance of pain or pain in the upper abdomen when running is often experienced by most people. This makes sports and other activities hampered because the pain appears.

According to the doctor and health content creator, Dr. Nadia Alaydrus, this condition in the medical world is called side stitch. Usually the upper part of the stomach to the sides feels like being pricked by needles.

“So in medical terms this is called a side stitch. “This is abdominal pain from the top to the side that feels like being pricked by a needle,” said Dr. Nadia, quoted from an upload on her Instagram account @nadialaydrus, Monday (6/5/2024).

Stomach pain can get worse if you take a deep breath. Doctor Nadia explained that side stitches can be caused because when exercising or doing activities, the body does not regulate breathing properly. Therefore, the diaphragm muscles experience a lack of oxygen and cramps.

“When you exercise or do activities without controlling your breath, the diaphragm muscles become increasingly deprived of oxygen. “This can then cause the diaphragm muscles to experience cramps,” he said.

Doctor Nadia also revealed several other causes of side stitches appearing during activities. Namely the habit of immediately moving actively after eating and the lack of warming up before exercise. Both of these things can also trigger cramps in the diaphragm muscles which must be actively moving.

“Then it causes pain in the upper part of the stomach. “Other triggers could also be after eating and immediately exercising, doing activities, or not warming up before exercising,” he said.

Those of you who like to drink sweet drinks and have a history of scoliosis are also prone to experiencing side stitches when exercising. Doctor Nadia recommends giving a gap of 2-3 hours after eating. Then, you can exercise, but make sure that you have warmed up beforehand.

If you have already experienced side stitch, you should sit down first and relax your body. Regulate your breath slowly by taking deep breaths. If you understand the technique of breathing exercises through the stomach, this method can also be used to relieve side stitches.

“If this side stitch has already happened, you can sit down and relax your body. “Regulate your breath by taking deep breaths, you can also do breathing exercises through your stomach to help relieve pain,” he concluded.
