Publika.az reports that after the event, the award appeared on an Azerbaijani auto sports fan named Nihad Nasirli. This news caused a great noise in both Azerbaijan and world media. Nasirli made a statement about this on his social network account and said that Hamilton gave him the award.
However, after some time, claims that the trophy was stolen spread on social networks. Even the “Mercedes” team had to release a statement about the incident.
“We want to clarify some of the claims published on social media about the award presented to Lewis. As in previous award ceremonies, when Hamilton left the stage, he accepted the offer of officials to send the trophy to the team, and therefore left it on the table. He did not present the trophy to anyone.”
After that, Nihad Nasirli informed about how he received the award:
“I’m disappointed that people are writing messages accusing me of stealing. First of all, I want to say that I didn’t steal anything. Mr. Hamilton put his prize on the table. Then I stood up and asked if I could take it. He said, ‘Yes, you can.’ Then I thought. that he gave it to me. After seeing Mercedes’ statement, I understood that there was a misunderstanding. Lewis mistakenly thought that I was the FIA official responsible for this.”
It should be noted that some mass media report that the problem has been resolved and that Nihad Nasirli has handed over the trophy to Mercedes officials.
