The pedestal on which stood the three tallest figures from the monument to the Soviet Army (also known as MOCHA) will not be removed until a decision is made about the future of the surrounding space – the Prince’s Garden. This was stated on Friday by the regional governor of Sofia Vyara Todeva. At the same time, however, she said that the relocation procedure was underway.
Todeva also commented that the regional administration is appealing the decisions of the administrative court, which stopped the removal of the figures. They were enacted when the sculptures had already been taken down.
“We are currently in another procedure – on relocation. And regardless of what the court decides about the demolition, we are going through the legal process of movingTodeva stated.
The plan is to move the monument to the Museum of Socialist Art. However, the space there is limited, and geological surveys of the terrain must also be done. According to Todeva, there are two options for the “situational” arrangement of the figures. The final decision would be taken by the Ministry of Culture.
“We have no plans for the plinth yet as we await a decision on what will be in place of the monument. So we cannot move and remove the plinth without a decision being made on what the future of the Princely Garden will beTodeva stated.
The deposed figures are still in the Sofia village of Lozen. They are outdoors as they are very large. A public tender for their restoration is about to be announced, the regional governor also said.
