King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan visited the site designated for the proposed ‘Bhutanese Special Economic Zone’ based in Kurigram. He reached Kurigram on Thursday (March 28) afternoon. The king expressed his satisfaction by visiting the appointed place. Sheikh Yusuf Harun, his traveling companion and executive chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) in Kurigram, told reporters this information.

Raja Wangchuk landed at Syedpur Airport in Nilphamari by plane from Dhaka. Later reach Kurigram by road. Around 1.30 pm visited the site of the proposed Economic Zone along Dharla Tiraborti of Kurigram. He stayed for about 15 minutes. Later he traveled to Bhutan via India via Sonahat land port of Bhurungamari Upazila of the district.

Beza Executive Chairman Sheikh Yusuf Harun told reporters, ‘His Majesty the King has agreed to develop this place as an economic zone. After visiting the place, he informed about his choice. The joint venture economic zone will start work. He urged on how to implement it, to start work as soon as possible. He also said, “I will personally come here (Kurigram) to inspect the work once again when the work starts.” He is completely satisfied with the place and the communication system here.’

During the visit to the designated place of the proposed economic zone, the King of Bhutan was present among others – State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Arafat, Member of Parliament for Kurigram-2 Constituency Dr. Hamidul Haque Khandkar, Member of Parliament of Kurigram-4 Constituency Biplab Hasan Palash, Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Saidul Arif, Superintendent of Police Al Asad Mahfuzul Islam, Kurigram Municipal Mayor Kaziul Islam and other political leaders and administration officials.

The District Administration and Beza have decided to set up a proposed ‘Bhutanese Special Economic Zone’ based on JTUJ in Kurigram as a joint initiative of the Government of Bangladesh and Bhutan.

The district administration has handed over 133.92 acres of Khas land to the Economic Zone Authority (BEZA) belonging to Madhavaram Mauza of Bhogdanga Union of the district headquarters. This Khas land is located on the north-east side of Syed Fazlul Karim (R.H.) Jamia Islamia Madrasa at the eastern end of Dharla Bridge. It is said that there is an opportunity to acquire land at that place if necessary.
