Thai Prime Minister Sretha Thawisini has confirmed that former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was sentenced to one year in prison, will be released early on February 18.

As “TASS” reports, this was reported by Thai PBS.

According to Tavisini, Shinawarta’s parole process will be carried out in accordance with the law.

Shinawatra served as the Prime Minister of Thailand in 2001-2006.

While he was in New York at the UN General Assembly session, a group of soldiers staged a coup. Shinawarta had to stay abroad. He visited Thailand in 2008 to stand trial. The politician was arrested, but was released on bail, and then finally left the country.

In 2008, the court sentenced him in absentia to two years in prison for abusing his official powers in purchasing state land. Since April 2019, he has been convicted of abuse of power, tax evasion and corruption.

74-year-old Thaksin Shinawatra returned to Thailand on August 22, 2023, after 15 years of self-imposed exile. The Supreme Court upheld some of the verdicts. On August 31, the former prime minister submitted a request for royal pardon. King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) of Thailand pardoned him for his contribution to the country’s development and reduced his prison term to one year.
