The Supreme Electoral Court of Guatemala suspended this Thursday the legal personality of the Semilla Movement, the party of the elected president, Bernardo Arévalo de León, at the request of a criminal judge who is investigating alleged anomalies in its creation process five years ago.

The order to suspend the Semilla Movement was made official in the Citizen Registry of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE), as reported by the same entity, after the Guatemalan electoral process formally ended on October 31.

The decision responds to the request presented on July 12 by the criminal judge, Freddy Orellana, to suspend the party due to an investigation by the Public Ministry (Prosecutor’s Office) for alleged anomalies in its creation process in 2018.

No effects on the election of the elected president of Guatemala

Despite the suspension of the political formation, according to the electoral court, the electoral results that gave the presidential victory to Arévalo de León as well as 23 deputies from Semilla cannot be reversed.

The Semilla Movement spokesperson informed EFE that they have not yet been notified about the suspension of their party.

On September 1, Arévalo de León accused Attorney General Consuelo Porras and Criminal Judge Orellana of attempting a “coup d’état” to prevent him from taking office on January 14.

Porras’ judicial actions have provoked massive protests and road blockades by the population to demand his resignation. With EFE
