The Castros capitalize on popular solidarity with Palestine in their favor

HAVANA, Cuba.- The actions of agitation and propaganda that the Castro-communist regime has staged in recent days have focused on the reality that has been experienced for months in Gaza. What is actually extrapolated to Palestine as a whole is the consequence of the brutal aggression that the terrorist group Hamas perpetrated against Israel on October 7, which has imposed its domination of totalitarian aspirations on the population of the aforementioned strip.

On this unfortunate island, once called the “Pearl of the Antilles,” it has become a common sight to see the ventrudo chiefs wearing the kind of scarf called keffiyeh (although I confess that I prefer the more Hispanicized version: kufiya). This is observed from the exalted first secretary and president Díaz-Canel to any student leader.

It is ironic that in this country, already plunged into misery and moving towards destitution, we see this exotic garment with some frequency. In essence, it would be more accurate to speak of a bloody mockery directed against the people of the Island: I mean that it is prohibitive or impossible for the nationals to obtain a typical garment or a simple scarf, but the happy kufiyas are seen left and right. ; and this despite being quite expensive, since these are handmade garments made by the Hirbawi monopoly. But, well, it is already known that their price is paid not by those who use them, but by the manirroto Liborio Pérez, representative of the Cuban people.

Strictly speaking, this new left-handed fashion is not even remotely exclusive to our Caribbean island. Also in Chavista Venezuela or in Nicaragua subjected to the dictatorship of Daniel Ortega, there are examples of “solidarity with Palestine.” In Bolivia, President Luis Arce went as far as… proposing the entry of the aforementioned Arab proto-State of the Near East into the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America!

But not only in countries subjected to “21st century socialism”, but even in those in which their rulers try to move in that direction, sympathies and support for Palestine prevail (which, strictly speaking, have a more specific recipient: Hamas). This is what has just happened with Gustavo Petro in fraternal Colombia, which has given rise to the complaint by colleague José Gregorio Martínez, published in PanamPostagainst the current president who came to public life as a terrorist guerrilla: “Petro turns the May 1 march into a political act against Israel.”

It should be noted that all this identification with the Palestinian cause (with Hamas, actually!) should not cause us surprise. There are evident discrepancies between the Muslim fundamentalists of Hamas and the Latin American leftists. In the case of the Chavistas, they declare themselves “Christians” and do not get “Diosito” out of their mouths; while the Castros continue to declare themselves “Marxist-Leninists” and, therefore, “scientific materialists” (or to put it more briefly: atheists).

But these obvious ideological divergences lose all importance when both declare themselves mortal adversaries of the United States and the democratic country of the Near East which is, despite the discrepancies between one and the other, the greatest ally of the superpower in that convulsed region of the world: Israel. This is how extreme anti-Yankeeism becomes the touchstone of the embarrassing complicities between authoritarians around the world.

But beyond the unspeakable alliances hatched between the powerful, we must think about how ordinary citizens react to these cabals. These are guided not by the geopolitical interests of the potbellied people who, without ever having submitted to the free and informed vote of their subjects, present themselves before them and before the rest of the world as their bosses and legitimate representatives.

It is that facet of the issue that particularly interests me in the case of our country; It is that which has motivated me to undertake the writing of this journalistic work. Can it be said that ordinary Cubans have responded favorably or feel identified right now with the unbridled agitation and propaganda that the Castro-communist regime carries out in favor of Hamas?

It is no longer possible for the Cuban people, who suffer firsthand the catastrophic consequences of the counterproductive measures that the omnipotent government has implemented with blood and fire for 64 years, to tell them stories about the dramatic realities of their island. Neither do the Castro-communists. They have succeeded with their shameful support for imperial Russia, its dictator Putin and the barbaric aggression unleashed against Ukraine.

That’s not exactly the case with the Israel-Hamas conflict. In this matter they have achieved some success in disinforming ordinary Cubans. For example, the savage aggression perpetrated on October 7 by the terrorist group against the Jewish State, the more than a thousand civilian victims it caused, the murders and rapes, and the hundreds of hostages held to this day in Gaza, have covered them with a cloak of silence.

Only a few analysts (such as Anisley Torres on NTV on Thursday) mention the origin of the current conflict, but downplaying its importance and trying to show that the Israeli reaction is totally disproportionate. Of course they silence that, given the arrogance of Hamas, the only hope of removing it from the control of Gaza and avoiding future similar aggressions is represented by energetic actions against its bases and its fighters, who are hiding among the civilian population. .

That, I believe, is an additional reason for independent journalists to try to clarify the truth before the captive people of Cuba, providing them with sufficient elements to understand what is really happening in the Near East and refuse to support the allies of the Castro-communist regime, and to do so with the same firmness with which it refuses, except for inevitable specific exceptions, to support its internal policies.
