Carrom in the country has benefited from organizing regular practice and games. Bangladesh won bronze in the Swiss League style singles event at the Asia Cup Carrom Championship which concluded in Maldives on Wednesday. This is Bangladesh’s first medal in the international event in this event. Hafizur Rahman brought this historic medal to Bangladesh. He won bronze as the second runner-up among 80 competitors.
Hafizur won this medal by getting 12 points at the end of seven rounds. India’s Prashant More won gold by scoring 14 points. Despite getting 12 points equal to Hafizur, Sri Lanka’s Mohammad Shahid Hilmi won the silver on net points.
Players from 7 countries participated in this tournament. In this event Bangladesh national team player Hemayet Mollah is 11th with 10 points, Mohammad Robin Ali is 28th with 8 points, Farzana Banu is 43rd with 6 points, Biplab Roy is next with equal points, Shamsunnahar Maqsuda is 56th with 6 points, next with the same points. Afsana Nasreen and Sabina Akhtar got 75th with 4 points.
Afsana Nasreen finished 13th, Shamsunnahar Maqsuda 14th, Sabina Akhter 15th in girls singles on the last day.
4 boys and 4 girls from Bangladesh participated in this competition.
Bangladesh Carrom Federation General Secretary Ashraf Ahmed Lyon told Jago News from Male, Maldives, ‘Bangladesh won silver in the team category in 2011. However, this is the first time that a carrom player from Bangladesh has won a bronze medal in a global event in a single event. This event has been included in the Asia Cup for the first time.
At the end of the competition, Maldives Sports Minister Abdullah Rafiu distributed the prizes on Wednesday night. Bangladesh Carrom Federation General Secretary Ashraf Ahmed Lyon was present at this time.
Bangladesh carrom team will return to Dhaka today Thursday evening.
