And throughout the month there was extremely hot weather in eastern India. According to IMD data, the average temperature in East and Northeast India last April was the highest since 1973. However, the average night temperature during the month was the highest on record.

West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar are also burning in the heat. Last Tuesday (April 30), Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature in April this year and the fourth highest for any month. Kolkata’s Alipore also recorded a temperature of 43 degrees Celsius on the day, which is slightly lower than the all-time high of 43.9 degrees Celsius recorded nearly a century ago. With this, only the second time the April temperature in Kolkata touched 43 degrees.

For the first time this summer in India, the mercury touched 47 degrees Celsius last Tuesday, that too in West Bengal. Kalaikunda recorded a temperature of 47.2 degrees Celsius that day, 10.4 degrees Celsius above normal. On the same day, Baharagora area of ​​East Singhbhum district of Jharkhand recorded a temperature of 47.1 degrees Celsius.

At least three places in the region — Kalaikunda, Panagarh (West Bengal) and Balasore (Orissa) — recorded temperatures 10 degrees Celsius above normal.

The IMD said the heat wave may continue in eastern India till May 2 and for at least five more days in southern India.
