The actor Ernesto Gómez Cruz died; He debuted in “Los Caifanes” and was a central figure in Mexican cinema

MEXICO CITY (process.com.mx).- The National Association of Actors (ANDA) reported on its networks the death of the first actor Ernesto Gómez Cruz, which occurred on the night of Saturday, April 6, who was 90 years old.

That instance only posted on X (Twitter), @andactores, around 12 midnight:

“The National Association of Actors regrets the sensitive death of our colleague Ernesto Gómez Cruz. Our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. The artistic community in Mexico today suffers the loss of a great artist and colleague. RIP (may he rest in peace).”

Gómez Cruz (Veracruz, November 7, 1933), first began photography in his native state, where he met a friend who invited him to study dramatic art. Although he wanted to be a singer, due to his shyness and lack of preparation he did not fulfill that dream. However, he dedicated himself fully to acting. His debut was in 1966 with the famous feature film “Los Caifanes”, by Juan Ibáñez, where he acted with Julissa, Óscar Chávez, Eduardo López Rojas, Enrique Álvarez Félix and Sergio Ramírez, and for his role “El Azteca” he won the Diosa silver.

He worked on more than two hundred films, the best known being “Herod’s Law” (1999), “A Wonderful World” (2006), “Hell” (2010) and “The Perfect Dictatorship” (2014), by Luis Estrada. ; “Bandidas” (2006), by Joachim Ronning and Espan Sandberg; “Perpetual Chain” (1975), “The Empire of Fortune” (1986) and “The Carnival of Sodom” (2006), by Arturo Ripstein; “The Crime of Father Amaro” (2002), by Carlos Carrera; “The Alley of Miracles” (1995), by Jorge Fons; “El padre Gallo” (1986), by Gonzalo Martínez Ortega, “El Norte” (1983), by Gregory Nava, and “Canoa” (1975), by Felipe Cazals, among others.

Ernesto Gómez Cruz was born in the port of Veracruz. He also worked in theater and television. He stood out in the third season of the series “Cappadocia” (2012). He won seven Ariel Awards throughout his career, a prize awarded by the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences. Around 2014, this institution awarded the Golden Ariel. His versatility allowed him to stand out in both dramas and comedies.

Mourning in Mexican cinema

In September 2019, Shorts México, Mexico’s International Short Film Festival, paid tribute to Gómez Cruz. Its director Jorge Magaña recalls to this news outlet:

“In Shorts Mexico there is a special program called Homenaje en Corto and we had done it for various personalities in the industry who have also made short films, and it was necessary for us that Mr. Ernesto Gómez Cruz have his recognition.
