Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP; photo in the center) will be present in Euclides da Cunha Paulista, in the far west of São Paulo, this Wednesday 24th, to deliver more than a thousand land regularization titles to the settlers, challenging the landless rural workers (MST).
The region, known as Pontal do Paranapanema, is the scene of this initiative which seeks to guarantee legality and legal security to landowners.
The event will be attended by the state secretary of Agriculture, Guilherme Piai, responsible for agrarian policy in state management, and Lucas Bressanin, executive director of the Fundação Itesp. According to information released by the Ministry, it will be the largest delivery of bonds ever made by the government of São Paulo.
Pontal do Paranapanema is made up of 32 municipalities. With more than 1 million hectares of vacant land, i.e. public areas occupied irregularly and without a defined use by public authorities or private owners, the region has become a stronghold for groups fighting for land reform.
Among these groups stands out the MST, which this week celebrates its 40 years of existence.
Handing over land titles to settlers is a policy adopted by Jair Bolsonaro’s government and has generated controversy. While landless movements and left-wing parties criticize the model, arguing that it weakens the land reform process, its defenders argue that this measure removes settlers from dependence on MST and similar movements, providing them with the freedom to produce in accordance with the market. rules.
The life of the colonists after the granting of land titles
With the support of Invasão Zero, a movement of rural producers in Bahia, in August last year, Crusoé came into contact with several former settlers living under the tyranny of the MST. After listening to their reports, you can see that there is a common denominator. They all began to arouse the ire of the MST after requesting or obtaining a land regularization title.
This is the document that transfers ownership of the land to its beneficiary, proving that that lot belongs to the settler. It is the latest step in the land reform process that is expected to end insecurities and provide a new life. For many settlers, however, the title of dominion marks the entry into hell, from which they can only escape by abandoning the place.
Domingas Neves de Jesus, 41, lived in an MST settlement for 13 years until she was expelled from her property. The threats began when she filed the documentation to obtain the domain title. “They came by setting off fireworks, bombs and shooting in front of my house, this happened at night, so much so that we had to leave the house at night and sleep outside for fear that they would attack us,” Domingas said.
Fearing fireworks and gunshots, Domingas packed up his belongings earlier this year and went to his son’s home in the municipality of Teixeira de Freitas. That same day, the house built with much sweat was demolished at the behest of the MST leaders. “People sent me a photo showing that my house had collapsed. I left my creations, transformer, there were still things inside the house (…) They didn’t let me take anything else and they put someone else on my lot,” Domingas reported.
