A state of emergency was declared in the city of Khabarovsk, in the Russian Far East, after an elevated radiation background was detected, reported Reuters and the Russian media TASS, RIA Novosti and Izvestia.
Elevated levels of radiation were detected near an electric pole, about 2.5 km from residential buildings, the local branch of Russia’s consumer safety watchdog Rospotrebnadzor reported, Reuters reported.
The increased level of the radiation background was found in the industrial area of Khabarovsk, says the website of the city administration, “Notices” indicates. According to the data of the Civil Protection and Emergency Management, access to the dangerous territory is limited. At the same time, the city authorities add, that there is no danger to the population of the city. As reported to “Izvestia” by the press service of the Khabarovsk City Hall, the radiation background slightly exceeds the permissible norms.
The TASS agency indicates that specialized teams sent to the place where the increase in the radiation background was detected, seized the source of the radiation. “The source has been seized, measures are being taken to destroy it,” the city administration said. The source is not specified.
At the place where the increase in the radiation background was detected, radiation control was organized, and the monitoring will be carried out for two days.
