Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves may be temporarily released on bail from prison where he is serving a sentence for sexual assault. The court in Barcelona decided on this, setting the amount of the guarantee at one million euros (about 25.3 million crowns). The verdict, which was not unanimous, is not yet final and could be overturned on appeal.
Other conditions in addition to bail include that Alves surrender both his Brazilian and Spanish passports to prevent him from leaving the country. In addition, he is ordered to report to the authorities every day and is prohibited from approaching the victim.
The 40-year-old Alves was a month ago sentenced to four and a half years in prison for sexual assault. According to the charges, he committed this the year before last December in a nightclub in Barcelona, he was arrested on January 20 last year and has been in pre-trial detention since then. All of his previous requests for release have been rejected due to the high risk of flight.
He has now asked to be temporarily released from prison pending a decision on his appeal. He has so far served roughly a quarter of his sentence in prison.
