Private health spending at a record high of 11.2 billion euros after the black/blue fund collapse – SPÖ calls for fight against two-tier medicine

Vienna (OTS/SK) Club chairman and health spokesman Philip Kucher sees the study published today by the IHS on private health spending in Austria as once again confirming what most people in Austria have long felt: “Austria’s much-praised health system is unfortunately getting worse. It’s now crashing in every corner. Two-tier medicine is increasing. Everyone feels this. From the patients to the healthcare staff!” ****

Specifically, the IHS confirms the data from Statistics Austria, according to which Austrians’ private health spending has increased, meaning that two-tier medicine is making further progress. At 11.2 billion euros, more money has never been spent privately on health in Austria than in the most recent reporting year. The IHS finds that numerous households suffer from this and that Austria is no longer at the forefront when it comes to the question of a health system that, if possible, does not require two-tier medicine. Kucher: “There is more and more, rather than less, two-tier medicine. No wonder, the problem of two-tier medicine doesn’t even appear in the current federal government’s government program.”

In the spirit of the IHS recommendation, the SPÖ demands a real offensive against the advancing two-tier medicine. Strengthening the public health system is the best answer to this. Missing doctors, missing nurses, postponed operations, ever longer waiting times for doctor’s appointments and operations, doctors having less and less time for their patients. There would be enough tasks for politics. The SPÖ is the only party that makes such a clear commitment to strengthening the public health system and formulates goals such as a guarantee of appointments within 14 days. (Final) lk/ls
