SPÖ women’s spokeswoman supports referendum on free contraception
Vienna (OTS/SK) – “In 2024, free and suitable contraceptives should actually be a matter of course in Austria,” says the deputy. Club chairwoman and SPÖ women’s spokesperson Eva-Maria Holzleitner. “I therefore welcome and support the initiative surrounding the referendum on ‘free contraception’.” Unfortunately, there is currently no movement in this area with the ÖVP and the Greens in the government. Initiatives like those of Aids Hilfe Wien, the ÖGF and the Vemina association are all the more important. ****
It is still an illusion that every woman can freely use the contraceptive method that suits her needs: “The sometimes very high costs that women often have to bear alone are a major obstacle for many. It is therefore high time that contraceptives were finally made available free of charge in Austria,” said Holzleitner, who sees this as an important step towards more self-determination for women. It is particularly relevant that the individual needs of each woman are taken into account. “Contraception cannot follow a one-size-fits-all logic. For example, whether the pill, IUD or diaphragm is the right decision should only be decided by the woman herself in consultation with her doctor. The wallet must have no influence on this,” says Holzleitner. There are now a number of role models in Europe – in Germany, for example, young women have their health insurance reimbursed for all prescription contraceptives up to their 22nd birthday; France provides free condoms to under 26s. “Austria must follow these pioneers. “The referendum that has now been launched will hopefully motivate the government to finally take action and implement concrete steps,” said Holzleitner.
