The government must urgently intervene in operating costs – SPÖ supports the reform model of the tenants’ association
Vienna (OTS/SK) – Operating costs represent a kind of “second rent” for tenants in Austria and make up around a quarter of the total net rent in the private rental sector. SPÖ building spokeswoman Ruth Becher explains: “Excessive operating costs mean that property-related costs are passed on to tenants. They could save almost 800 euros a year in an average private apartment by implementing the tenants’ association’s reform model. “A large amount that would be a significant relief for household expenses, especially in times of immense inflation,” she said, supporting the tenants’ association’s proposal. ****
At the moment, however, the reality is different: “Due to the extreme price increases in recent years, it is clear to everyone that operating costs will also rise sharply. The federal government is urgently called upon to act here. The turquoise-green government must take action now and not wake up until it is too late,” demands Becher.
“It’s time for the basic need of housing to finally become more affordable again,” says Becher, “our proposals have been on the table for a long time.” And further: “The SPÖ wants a universal tenancy law that brings all apartments within the scope of the Tenancy Law and thus regulates rents for everyone. And the SPÖ is calling for the increase from April 2023 to be revoked and for rent increases to be stopped until 2025, after which the rent increase should be limited to a maximum of 2 percent annually,” explains Becher.
