Spain, fourth EU country where agricultural products increased the most

Spain was the fourth country in the European Union where the prices of agricultural products increased the most at origin in 2023, behind the Netherlands, Greece and Portugal, according to Eurostat data.

Specifically, the prices of Agricultural products and current consumer goods and services in agriculture rose 12.32% last year in Spain, due to the 16.43% increase in animal products and the 9.46% increase in plant products.

In this way, the rise in the prices of agricultural products in Spain exceeded the increase in the CPI in food by five points in December, which closed at 7%.

Spain thus stood behind the Netherlands, where agricultural prices rose by 35.66% in 2023, Greece (+15.31%), Portugal (+16.16%) and Cyprus (+10.69%). In total, the EU average shows an increase of 2.02% in 2023.

On the contrary, hehe EU countries where agricultural products decreased the most at origin were Bulgaria (-19.81%), Lithuania (-19.23%), Hungary (-15.68%), Latvia (-10.93%) and Estonia (-10.86%).

Regarding production costs, in Spain they fell by 6.75% last year, mainly due to the decreases in energy and lubricants (-27.05%), and in fertilizers and amendments (-18, 93%), but also in feed (-2.62%) compared to the 1.10% increase in phytosanitary products, according to Eurostat data.

Spain thus positioned itself as the eighth country in the EU where the costs of agricultural means of production decreased the most, after the Netherlands (-18.46%), Lithuania (-15.29%), Croatia (-12.08% ), Latvia (-10.91%), Belgium (-10.26%), Finland (-9.37%) and Sweden (-6.87%). In total, the EU average shows a reduction in costs of 4.56%.
