A shooting at Charles University in Prague this Thursday caused an unspecified number of deaths and dozens of injuries, the Czech Police reported.

“An unknown person opened fire shortly after 3:00 p.m. (2:00 p.m. GMT) at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Charles University of Prague, on Jan Palach Square,” in the heart of the capital, Radio Prague International reported.

Equipped with a long gun with a telescopic sight, the aggressor continued shooting after law enforcement arrived at the scene, until he was finally killed.

“The shooter has been eliminated! “At the moment the entire building is being evacuated and there are several dead and dozens of injured people at the scene,” the Czech Police wrote on their X (formerly Twitter) account.

In another message, he urged citizens not to go out on the streets.

“Currently all emergency services are on site. “We will provide more information as soon as possible,” the police authority said.

On social networks, students of the aforementioned faculty shared information about people who remained sheltered in the classrooms or in the university library, before the authorities began to evacuate the educational center.

Some media cited witnesses who said they heard an explosion.

The agents cordoned off the entire area and cut off traffic and public transportation in its surroundings. With EFE
