The two hunters died after eating deer meat which was believed to be infected with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) or better known as zombie deer.
They experience neurological symptoms similar to those seen in animals, raising concerns that CWD could be transmitted from deer to humans.
This disease attacks the brain and nervous system, causing drooling, lethargy, disorientation and thinness.
The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio researched the deaths of the two hunters in 2022. Their findings found that the disease may have spread from animals to humans.
One of the victims discussed was a 72 year old man. He suffered from ‘confusion and rapid violent behavior’ as well as seizures.
The patient died within a month despite treatment.
“The patient’s history includes similar cases in his social group, indicating the possibility of transmission of CWD from animals to humans,” the scientists wrote in a case report published in the journal Neurology as reported by The Sun, Tuesday (23/4/2024).
The hunter’s friend also died of the same disease, but the new study doesn’t provide many details about his condition.
CWD is fatal and there is currently no known treatment or vaccine
