Vienna (OTS) This year, the Axel Corti Prize, awarded as part of the 56th Television Prize by the “Conference of Adult Education in Austria”, goes to the documentary filmmaker and author Ruth Beckermann (born 1952 in Vienna). This was decided on April 25, 2024 by a jury made up of representatives of the award-sponsoring associations, print media and a media scientist.

“Ruth Beckermann always stands out for her in-depth socially critical analyzes – whether in the film, as an author or through her clear political positions,” said John Evers, spokesman for the jury.

In her first film (“Arena Occupied” [1977]), the filmmaker documents the creation of the Arena cultural center and creates an important contemporary historical film document of the 1970s in Vienna. Subsequent works revolve, on the one hand, about power and dominance relations as well as anti-Semitism in Austrian society (“Waldheim’s Waltz”) [2018]). On the other hand, Ruth Beckermann also deals intensively with questions of identity and ideology and sheds light on gender relations and sexuality (“Mutzenbacher”) [2022]). For example, she focuses on Jewish life in the publication “Life! Jews in Vienna after 1945” [2008]published by Mandelbaum Verlag, and in the film “Zorro’s Bar Mitzvah” [2006] on Jewish identity and youth. In her current film “Favorites” [2024] She is dedicated to the dark side of our education system.

The award ceremony for the Axel Corti Prize will take place on June 25, 2024 at 6:30 p.m. (doors open at 6:00 p.m.) in the RadioKulturhaus in Vienna, where the winners of the 56th Television Awards for Adult Education will also be announced.
