Leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) have agreed to form a government in Pakistan. The leaders of the parties made this announcement at a joint press conference in Islamabad on Tuesday (February 13). Pakistani media Dawn reported this news.
Before the press conference, the leaders held a meeting at the residence of PML-Q leader Chowdhury Shujat Hossain. It was attended by PML-N leader Shahbaz Sharif, PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari, MQM-P leader Khalid Maqbool Istekham-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) leader Aleem Khan.
In a press conference after the meeting, PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari said, “We have decided to unite Pakistan and form a government to overcome the crisis.” Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will be welcomed into the reconciliation process during the crisis. All are invited to engage in reconciliation discussions.
Asif Ali Zardari said, after seeing everything we thought and decided to sit together. We fought against each other in the polls. But we won’t fight forever. The election was opposed. It was electoral opposition, not ideological. Leaders can sit together and talk together and run the country together.
PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif said political leaders gathered with him to tell the nation that the days of electoral politics of opposition are over, now is the time to form Parliament. Now our fight is against the challenges of the country. The first challenge is economics. We have to stabilize it, it is a difficult task. Countries move forward when their leaders unite and decide to end conflict, moving the nation forward to eliminate problems.
Reminiscing about his previous tenure as prime minister, Shahbaz said, “When I was prime minister, I announced Nawaz Sharif as our party’s prime ministerial candidate. Now I request him to accept this post. Also, I formally announce Maryam Nawaz as our candidate for the post of Chief Minister of Punjab.
MQM convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that at the moment no party’s interest can be greater than serving Pakistan. We will strengthen democracy through cooperation and support Shahbaz Sharif. We have supported him before and will continue to do so.
He said, everyone should put aside political interests and move forward with the common goal of serving the country.
