Among the most common, according to him, are memory disorders, fatigue, joint pain, skin manifestations such as rash, hair loss. “It could be almost anything. That’s why it’s a relatively difficult unit to grasp.” said plastic surgeon.
How many women have implants?
BII is not a recognized medical diagnosis, precisely because the symptoms are so numerous and occur in only a small percentage of women who have implants, and in variable combinations.
“According to current studies, only 0.1% of women with implants have these problems. And what is also important, we actually do not know at all how many women in the world have breast implants, it is only estimated at 35 million, we also do not know how many women out of those 35 million have exactly those symptoms, because a lot of women probably have it but don’t feel it. There are no diagnostic criteria that tell us this is the disease. We also don’t know how severe the symptoms have to be to recognize them,” said an expert at the Epicenter, adding that he also appeals to women who have any problems to consider whether they are related to the implants.
“Women without implants have the same symptoms as women with implants or those that have completely different implants, such as orthopedic ones. It’s not that it’s a breast implant, it’s that it’s some kind of foreign body that can cause some reactions in genetically predisposed susceptible people, which may lead to those difficulties,” Molitor specified.
Is this hysteria?
According to the associate professor, not yet, but what is not, can be. Important according to him is not to spread panic on social networks and to deal with problems, if any, with prudence. The number of women with implants is increasing every year, so of course there are more women who then have some problems, look for the cause, find out about it on social networks, on the Internet, and that’s why it’s importanteh, so that the messages on those social networks and the Internet are valid, so that they are not unnecessarily alarming, but also unnecessarily comforting, because the number of women is increasing and will continue to increase,” concluded Molitor.
