With a cycle of three piano recitals in the Hall of Honor of the Legislative Branch building in Santiago, the Library of the National Congress of Chile will pay tribute to the Chilean master Claudio Arrau during the month of May, on the occasion of 40 years since the last time he visited our country.

It was in 1984, after 17 years of absence, when the renowned national pianist returned to Chilean soil, offering piano recitals at the Municipal Theater of Santiago and a series of concerts with the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile and the Santiago Philharmonic Orchestra. , in addition to pedagogical and cultural meetings in our capital and in Chillán, his hometown, in an indelible milestone for the cultural world of our country.

In this context, the Library of Congress has summoned three of the most outstanding Chilean pianists of today, to offer three days of recitals open to the community, including a conversation in which the musicians will share their personal and musical experiences around the figure of Arrau, together with the orchestra director and 2012 National Musical Arts Award, Juan Pablo Izquierdo.

The person in charge of opening the cycle of recitals will be the teacher Edith Fischer, next Monday, May 13 at 5:00 p.m., a day that will be inaugurated by the highest authorities of the Congress and where the conversation will take place in which the other two will also participate. protagonist pianists of the cycle: Luis Latorre and Felipe Browne, who, as young musicians, were present in the classes taught by Claudio Arrau in 1984.

Diego Matte, Director of the Library of Congress, noted that “for our institution it is an honor to pay this tribute to the greatest Chilean pianist in our history, with whom Congress has a very special bond since, thanks to the scholarship awarded by the Senate, “Arrau was able to travel to Germany to train when he was 5 years old.”

For his part, for the President of the Senate, José García Ruminot, this activity represents “a unique opportunity to link the National Congress with the citizens through the work of Claudio Arrau, who is a Chilean figure recognized worldwide. We are excited to open our headquarters in Santiago for music, art and culture. We hope that through our Library we can generate many more instances like this, whether in Santiago or Valparaíso.”

Finally, the pianist Luis Latorre, who has been the main promoter of this cycle of recitals and who was with Claudio Arrau as a student in 1984, recalled this experience as “immeasurable, not only for the prevailing emotion and for its valuable musical indications but for “Also see the enormous simplicity and disposition of one of the greatest pianists in the world and in musical history.”

It should be noted that in 2009, the Library of Congress published the book “Claudio Arrau León and the National Congress of Chile: 1908-1921”, regarding the centenary of the concert that the boy Claudio Arrau offered at the Palacio de La Moneda and the support that the Senate gave him a scholarship in Germany.
