Lahore: Despite Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s assurance of protecting farmers’ interests, the Pakistani government’s response to the investigation into the wheat scam appears to be evasive, Dawn reports. Although he has promised unwavering support for farmers, the reluctance of the federal government to fully investigate the alleged scam and hold those responsible accountable is clear. Cabinet Secretary Kamran Ali Afzal is heading the fact-finding committee to uncover irregularities in wheat imports. However, the report said there appears to be an element of hesitation within the government to fully engage in the investigation. A PML-N source revealed that Nawaz Sharif was insisting on strict action against criminals, irrespective of their political influence. However, according to Dawn, despite suggestions, there is a notable lack of enthusiasm in the current government to involve bodies like NAB or FIA in the investigation. Information Minister Ataullah Tarar’s dismissal of involving NAB or FIA raises eyebrows, especially given the magnitude of the alleged scam, which is worth over PKR 500 million, warranting their involvement as per the new laws. The government’s cautious approach, due to the involvement of the former caretaker government, reflects its reluctance to tread controversial ground.
Reports suggesting substantial wheat imports under Shehbaz Sharif’s administration after the elections have added another layer to the controversy, it said. Denials from government officials refute the allegations, further complicating the situation. The blame for the wheat crisis has been placed on the caretaker government, thereby absolving the current administration of any blame. Adding to the confusion are reports of the fact-finding committee summoning former acting officers, which its chief Kamran Ali Afzal quickly dismissed.
Tension is rising within the PML-N, with Hanif Abbasi confronting former caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar over the wheat scam. Kakkar’s veiled threats hint at underlying political maneuvering, which adds intrigue to the drama that unfolds. The PTI seized the opportunity to push for a judicial commission, taking advantage of the discord within the opposition camp.
Amid the chaos, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif attempted to reassure farmers of his unwavering support. The formation of a committee to address farmers’ grievances reflects his proactive stance, aimed at alleviating concerns regarding wheat procurement, reports Dawn. ,ANI)
