The candidate of the European People’s Party to preside over the European Commission and current president of this institution, Ursula von der Leyen, yesterday Monday left the door open to cooperate with the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), the group that brings together Vox, the Brothers of Italy of Giorgia Meloni or the Poles of Law and Justice, in the next legislature.

“It will depend on the composition of the European Parliament and who is in each group,” Von der Leyen responded to a direct question from the Greens candidate, Bas Eickhout, during the first debate ahead of the elections to the European Parliament between eight representatives of European political parties.

ECR, not represented that night in the debate, is one of the two groups in the European Parliament that welcomes far-right parties; The other is Identity and Democracy, which brings together Alternative for Germany, Marine le Pen’s National Rally or the Italian League, with whom Von der Leyen has refused to enter a coalition after the elections.

Eickhout, who had urged him to clarify whether he would work with the ultra-conservative group in the future European Parliament, responded to the statement with “what?” and laughter was heard from another candidate off camera.
